Bailiff - Definition and related terms.
Bailiff is a governor or custodian, a legal officer to whom some degree of authority, care or jurisdiction is committed.
Bailiffs are of various kinds and their offices and duties vary greatly.
Duties of the bailiff include:
- the service of legal documents,
- repossession and evictions in accordance with court judgments,
- application of the Denver boot (a wheel clamp, a device designed to stop vehicles from moving),
- the execution of arrest warrants.
Bailiffs receive a special training and must have a degree in Paralegal Technology. In Canada, bailiffs are responsible for the service of legal process.
